Dr. Averbach was born and raised in Clifton, NJ., the son of a family physician and a concert pianist. After graduating from Clifton High School, he received his
A.B. degree from the College of the University of Pennsylvania where he was president of the marching band. He received his medical education at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He was married to his wife, Maida Silver, on the day before graduation.
The couple came to Long Branch's Monmouth Medical Center after a 3 week honeymoon to begin a 5 year training program in general surgery. Dr. Averbach was instrumental in MMC's obtaining full accreditation in Surgery, and he became the first of a multitude of illustrious surgeons to become Board Certified after training at Monmouth.
After graduation from MMC, he server 2 years as a surgeon in the Army Medical Corp. During a year in Viet Nam, he was head of a 3 man surgical team at the 24th Evacuation Hospital where he received extensive experience in trauma surgery. After discharge from the Army, he joined Dr. Virgilio Ciampa in surgical practice at Monmouth Medical Center.
During his career at MMC, Dr. Averbach has served in many capacities. He was Chairman of the Intensive Care Committee for 15 years. He was co-chairman of the Disaster Committee for many years with Dr. Otto Lehmann. He served for 3 years on the Medical Staff Executive Committee. As an educator of young surgeons and medical students for 35 years, Dr. Averbach holds the title of Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery at Drexel University. He was one of the founding surgeons of the MMC Breast Center.
In 1988, Dr. Averbach was joined in practice by Dr. Mark Schwartz. They were joined by Dr. Aron Gornish in 1990, and they formed the Atlantic Surgical Group.
Dr. and Mrs. Averbach live in West Long Branch. They have 3 grown children and boast about their 10 grandchildren. They travel extensively in their motor home with and without their grandchildren. He is an accomplished clarinetist and has been president of the Great Shore Concert Band for many years.
